Reid’s Law passes the Tasmanian Parliament
The Police Offences Amendment (Knives and Other Weapons) Bill 2025, known as Reid’s Law, has passed the Tasmanian Parliament.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said the introduction of Reid’s Law will save lives.
“These new powers, including the use of metal-detection wands, will empower our police to get these weapons out of the hands of those that wish to do harm,” Minister Ellis said.
“When these criminals are caught, our tough new penalties will allow us to throw the book at them.
“We’re also ensuring our Police have the tools they need to keep Tasmanians safe, with the permanent rollout of metal detection wands making up part of our $1.7 billion investment into Police in the 2025-26 Budget.
“These strong new laws are a credit to the advocacy of Laraine Ludwig, who has worked tirelessly on these reforms to ensure horrific tragedies such as the one she and her family experienced can be prevented.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the work of the Jack Beasley Foundation, here in Tasmania and nationally, and I cannot thank them enough for their work in making our community a safer place.
“Tasmanians have told us they want a government who keeps them safe, and through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, that’s exactly what we are doing.”
