Mining operations at Hellyer to cease
The Tasmanian Government has directed Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd to cease mining operations at the Hellyer Mine due to multiple and significant non-compliances with financial and operational requirements under the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Felix Ellis, said the decision was necessary to ensure accountability and to safeguard Tasmania’s regulatory standards.
“When a company extracts and sells a Crown-owned mineral, it must meet its obligations,” Minister Ellis said.
“Hellyer has fallen significantly behind in paying their debts due to the crown and other compliance issues have continued to escalate. This action is necessary to prevent those matters worsening.”
Minister Ellis said Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) had confirmed that Hellyer’s authority to mine under the Act has been removed.
“Mining operations may only resume once the company has substantively addressed its non-compliances,” Minister Ellis said.
“If the company resolves these matters, operations could recommence quickly and lawfully.
“MRT has worked closely with the Environment Protection Authority and WorkSafe Tasmania to ensure this direction is carried out safely, and in a way that manages environmental and operational risk.”
Minister Ellis said the company had repeatedly failed to meet its obligations despite extensive engagement and opportunities to comply.
“Hellyer has been given multiple opportunities over an extended period to rectify these issues,” Minister Ellis said.
“We are also aware of significant pressures on contractors, suppliers and employees as a result of the company’s position.
“Our Government will support affected workers, with access to Employee Assistance Program services, career advice and pathways to alternative employment, upskilling or reskilling where required.
“We call on the company to resolve its non-compliances, make good on what is owed, and ensures a clear, stable and safe pathway forward.
“While I am deeply disappointed by the actions of Hellyer’s leadership, Tasmania’s mining sector continues to operate to very high standards.
“The responsible operators who make up the bulk of this industry do the right thing.”
